Damaraland, Twyfelfontein and Game Viewing Drive

11.6.17 Damaraland, Twyfelfontein
Game Viewing Drive

Another 5 AM wake-up call for a 6 AM departure. Tough to get up so early but fantastic sunrise shots!

And we get lucky with extra close-ups with our elephant family from yesterday  - especially the baby...

More great landscape panoramas and videos (can't get enough of these).

A datura in a dry, cracked riverbed.

We also spot a yellow hornbill - AKA the flying banana...

 And a korhaan...

 And a springbok herd...

We finally arrive at Twyfelfontain, an open-air gallery of more than 2500 ancient rock engravings on red sandstone,  depicting African wildlife. Sections of these petroglyphs date back to the early Stone Age and are considered among the continent's greatest collections of prehistoric art.

Our very knowledgeable guide Tivar.

Scrambling up and down the granite.

A collage illustrating some of the more interesting petroglyphs.

Our next stop was the Burnt Mountain, where countless years of wind blown sand and dust settled into thick sedimentary beds that covered layers from an inland lake rich in marine life and vegetation. The weight on the sedimentary layers caused it to solidify into shale. Eventually, basaltic rock magma greater than 1000 degrees Celsius pushed up towards the earth's surface as the Karoo Volcanism. The organic material was vaporized and the residual shale was baked into a blackish colored, compacted rock.

Very close to the Burnt Mountain was a path to the valley of dolomite columns called Organ Pipes.

Our final stop for the day was the Damara Living Museum, where the Damara people shared their very interesting past and the present culture.

 Making beaded jewelry.

Skinning a hide to make a pelt.

Fire starting with straw, dung and friction.

When we returned to our camp we enjoyed a traditional boma meal - starting with a small cup of lentil soup and homemade bread, traditionally cooked over a fire - followed by a sumptuous buffet of oryx, hake, multiple vegetables and fruit. Everything was amazing!

Our fantastic hostesses, Gandhi and Emmy.
